Executive Summary
“The mission of Florida’s Early Learning-20 education system shall be to increase the proficiency of all students within one seamless, efficient system, by allowing them the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills through learning opportunities and research valued by students, parents, and communities.”
-Florida Department of Education
This commitment from Florida’s Department of Education aligns with the commitment of school districts, universities, and other stakeholders in Florida to fostering a broader vision for a robust, future-ready society—one that responsibly embraces emerging technologies and remains globally competitive. As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the way we live and learn, integrating AI thoughtfully in K–12 education will be key to advancing this mission and equipping all students with the skills they need to succeed.

Why AI, Why Now?
AI encompasses a wide range of computer-based tools, ranging from simple chatbots to advanced generative AI systems capable of creating new content (like text, images, or audio). In classrooms, these tools may help teachers personalize instruction, enhance critical thinking skills, and streamline administrative tasks. However, the rapid advancement of AI tools also raises important considerations around data privacy, academic integrity, and concerns about potential over-dependence or environmental impact. Ensuring responsible use of AI in Florida’s schools requires a thoughtful approach – one that balances innovation with safeguards, and fosters ongoing reflection and iterative updates. Effective and responsible use of AI in Florida’s schools must preserve agency in learning and work so students, educators, and families can effectively and sustainably harness AI for future growth.
Successfully integrating AI in such a way, while meeting the mission of our Department of Education, requires active participation from teachers, parents, administrators, community organizations, and industry partners. When families understand AI’s benefits and limitations, when schools thoughtfully choose and monitor AI tools, and when businesses offer mentorship and resources, everyone benefits. This collective approach not only promotes equity and safety but also prepares our students—Florida’s future leaders—with the problem-solving skills and adaptability needed in today’s rapidly changing world.
Goals, Principles, and Output of our Florida K-12 AI Task Force
Our Task Force aims to unify stakeholder efforts and guide Florida’s K–12 AI initiatives with clear goals, ethical principles, and practical strategies. Included and beyond this guidance document, our collective work will include additional resources—such as best practice guides, real-world use cases, and professional development tools—to support teachers, administrators, families, and technology partners. By prioritizing transparency, data protection, and access, we help ensure that AI’s integration in Florida classrooms enhances teaching and learning, empowers students for success, and advances the mission of a world-class education system.
Purpose
The purpose of these guidelines is to help everyone in our education community understand how to use AI safely, wisely, and effectively. This document explains what AI is, how it can help learning and teaching, potential issues that need monitoring, and what steps should be taken to keep our students and schools secure. We want to help make sure that every member of our community– students, teachers, parents and caregivers, administrators, IT professionals–feels confident in using AI to improve learning and teaching.
